Hours after informing employees of a fresh round of worldwide layoffs in an email that was reportedly sent in error, US internet giant Amazon has announced it will eliminate 16,000 jobs. The BBC was able to view the email, which was issued late on Tuesday and mentions that a large number of workers in the US, Canada, and Costa Rica were let go in an attempt to “strengthen the company.
The communication was swiftly cancelled, suggesting that it was shared in error. In an effort to “remove bureaucracy” at the company, Amazon announced job cuts early on Wednesday.
Amazon’s senior vice president of people experience and technology, Beth Galetti, stated on Wednesday that the company does not want to make “broad reductions every few months” in reference to the company’s October announcement of 14,000 corporate job layoffs. Many teams completed their organizational modifications in October, but some teams haven’t finished them yet, according to her.
About 350,000 of Amazon’s 1.5 million employees work in corporate positions worldwide. Amazon has not disclosed which nations will be impacted or where the most recent job losses will occur.
An executive assistant issued a calendar invitation to several Amazon employees on Tuesday that contained a draft email authored by Colleen Aubrey, a senior vice president at Amazon Web Services (AWS).
