Financial crime prosecutors in France said they have begun a preliminary investigation into former Culture Minister Jack Lang’s ties to Jeffrey Epstein. Lang, a key actor in French socialist regimes from the 1980s to the 2000s, is being probed for “laundering of tax fraud proceeds.
It comes after the US Department of Justice released the Epstein files, which revealed linkages between the Lang family and the late American sex offender. Lang, who is now 86 years old, denies any misconduct and called the claims against him “baseless.
He told AFP that the investigation “will shed much light on the accusations that call my probity and honour into question. Lang offered to quit as chairman of the Arab World Institute, a body that fosters collaboration and exchanges between France and Arab countries, just hours after the probe was disclosed.
Lang stated in a letter to Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, which was seen by AFP, that he will retire at the next board meeting. The former French minister, whose name appears over 700 times in the Epstein papers, has previously rebuffed calls to resign.
