Raúl Castro of Cuba is Accused of Murder by the US Over the Downing of two Planes in 1996

In connection with the 1996 downing of two planes between Cuba and Florida, the US has accused former Cuban leader Raúl Castro with conspiracy to assassinate US citizens and other offenses.

Castro and five other people are charged in the case, which was made public on Wednesday, with shooting down the plane of the Cuban-American organization Brothers to the Rescue, killing four people, including three Americans.

Castro, who is currently 94 years old, led the nation’s military forces at the time and was condemned internationally for the disaster. President Miguel Díaz-Canel referred to the accusations as “a political manoeuvre, devoid of any legal foundation” as the US tries to put more pressure on Cuba’s communist government.

Speaking at Miami’s Freedom Tower, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche declared that Castro will also face four separate counts of murder for the murders of Armando Alejandre Jr., Carlos Alberto Costa, Mario Manuel de la Peña, and Pablo Morales, as well as charges of damage of aircraft.
President Trump and the United States do not and will not overlook their citizens, according to Blanche.
