Following the failure of Europe’s Future Combat Air System (FCAS) program, a new fighter aircraft plan led by Germany is taking form. Airbus will lead an eight-company coalition known as ‘Team Gen 6’ in a Berlin debut on Thursday, according to AFP.
The alliance intends to construct a next-generation fighter plane and plans to provide more details at a signing ceremony during the ILA air show in Berlin. The move comes after Berlin and Paris abandoned the FCAS project on Monday, after months of disagreements between Airbus and French manufacturer Dassault.
Airbus stated that the businesses had already presented a position paper to German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius describing their concept for a sixth-generation combat aircraft.
The consortium is pressing the German government to award contracts “fully and on time” by the second half of 2026, according to the news agency, which has access to the paper.
According to a project insider, the participating corporations could sign the deal in private as early as Wednesday. In addition to Airbus, the partnership comprises MBDA, a European missile maker, and six German companies: Hensoldt, Diehl Defence, MTU Aero Engines, Liebherr, Autoflug, and Rohde and Schwarz.
