After almost 13 years, Qatar Airways said on Thursday that it will start operating flights to the Syrian capital, Damascus, again, with three weekly flights starting on Tuesday. In a statement, the national airline of Qatar said it “is pleased to announce the resumption of three weekly flights to Damascus, Syria, from 7 January 2025.”
It was praised as a “significant step in reconnecting the region,” around a month after Syria’s long-standing tyrant Bashar Al Assad was overthrown by Islamist-led rebels, ending more than ten years of civil conflict. In order to guarantee that all operational, safety, and security requirements are fulfilled prior to the restart, Qatar Airways is collaborating closely with the appropriate authorities, the airline stated.
The firm is “happy to resume flights to Damascus, a destination of great historical and cultural importance,” according to CEO Badr Mohammed Al-Meer. Doha has offered the new Syrian government assistance in restarting operations at Damascus airport, a Qatari official told AFP last month. After the Assad regime was overthrown on December 8, Qatar became the second nation after Turkey to reopen its embassy in the Syrian capital.
