The news that his beloved garden plant has been deemed poisonous has left Chandan Sojitra, a British expat who has lived in Dubai UAE for six years, in shock. Because of its reputation for being minimally cared for, he Must now uproot the oleander seedling that he planted.
The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) outlawed the manufacturing, distribution, propagation, and cultivation of this “beautiful but toxic” plant on Tuesday, October 8. Sojitra’s affinity to the tree is now overwhelmed by safety worries as he intends to ask his gardener to remove it safely and alter the surrounding soil.
Experts warn that if consumed, any component of the oleander plant can be toxic and cause symptoms ranging from nausea to serious heart problems.
Sojitra didn’t see any warnings regarding the oleander’s hazardous nature when he bought it three years ago. “I checked a number of reputable garden centre websites, but none of them issued any warnings. At the time, I also didn’t find any information on Google,” he clarified. “Cats and small birds appeared to adore that tree, frequently visiting to peck at the flowers.”
