Anti-Government Protests in Kenya Caused At Least 30 Deaths.

Human Rights Watch reported on Saturday that at least thirty people had died in protests that broke out in Kenya this week over the government’s push to increase taxes in the East African nation significantly.

On Tuesday, June 25, 2024, Kenyan security forces opened fire on protestor crowds, including those who were running,” the NGO said in a statement.

Although there is no confirmation on the exact number of people killed in Nairobi and other towns, Human Rights Watch found that at least 30 people had been killed on that day based on witness accounts, publicly available information, hospital and mortuary records in Nairobi as well as witness accounts,” said the statement.

Shooting unjustified targets directly into crowds, especially when demonstrators are attempting to escape, is wholly unacceptable under Kenya nnd international law,” said Otsieno Namwaya, associate Africa director at Human Rights Watch.

The 300 injured victims and 22 fatalities were reported by the state-funded Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, which also announced that an investigation would be launched.

“Eight military officers just started shooting people when they emerged. They killed a number of people, including people who were not involved in the demonstrations, a rights activist in Nairobi was quoted by HRW.

Kenya’s international partners should continue to monitor the situation actively… and further urge Kenyan authorities to speedily but credibly and transparently investigate abuses by the security forces,” the rights organization stated.
