Emirates, the biggest international airline in the world, has partnered with The Donkey Sanctuary, an international animal welfare organization, to raise awareness of the dangers associated with the air freight of donkey skins.
In order to draw attention to the dangers associated with the donkey skin trade and its link to serious and organized criminal activity, The Donkey Sanctuary and Emirates collaborated to develop the Aviation Risk and Threat Assessment operational guide.
The majority of the six million donkeys slain annually for their skins are in Africa, according to the most recent statistics from The Donkey Sanctuary. After that, these skins are shipped and flown worldwide before being employed to create traditional medicines and cures.
Significant evidence revealed the connection between the transportation of donkey skins and other illegal wildlife trafficking and organized crime, according to study conducted by The Donkey Sanctuary and the Saïd Business School and Wildlife Conservation study Unit (WildCRU) at the University of Oxford. The global biosecurity is also seriously threatened by the unregulated and unsanitary skin trade.
Donkey hide transportation is already prohibited by the Emirates. At the 37th African Union (AU) Summit in February of this year, African heads of state approved a continent-wide ban on donkey slaughter for their skins. Emirates expanded its zero-tolerance policy on the transportation of prohibited animals, hunting trophies, and related items including donkey hides and parts, within days after the AU ruling.
