Residents of the UAE Learn to “Keep Cash on Hand” When a Tech Outage Prevents Card Payments

The global tech meltdown that occurred on Friday should serve as a wake-up call to everyone, not just companies and governments. Residents of the UAE have learned to always have some cash on hand. A strange sign reading “Cash only” caused several residents, who were accustomed to the ease of using their cards everywhere in the UAE, to suddenly find themselves short on cash.

Nida Huq, a Pakistani expat, realised she needed to fill up her car while she was driving her son to summer camp. “Usually, I pay around Dh210 for a full tank. She told Khaleej Times, “But I quickly told the attendant to stop the petrol pump as soon as I saw the board that said, ‘only cash’.” “They had already filled the tank with fuel worth Dh88. Huq, who resides in the Abu Hail neighbourhood of Dubai, stated, “I looked in my bag for cash and found only Dh70.”

“I asked the attendant to let me go, promising to return shortly and settle the outstanding amount. Fortunately, he consented. After an hour, I was able to return with the remaining funds.” Marketing executive Mohammed AbuHamid was “embarrassed” when he and his friends had to leave a restaurant without paying the bill.
