At the World Governments Summit, Colombian President Gustavo Petro Urrego called on world leaders and decision-makers to work together to address the climate issue and the dangers posed by artificial intelligence (AI).
The exponential expansion of AI and its potential to upend labour markets, displace millions of people, and worsen social and ethnic conflicts were highlighted by Urrego in his speech on Wednesday. He cautioned that if AI is not regulated correctly, it may result in a large loss of jobs and a rise in international migration, especially if climate change makes large areas uninhabitable.
Urrego warned that if AI-driven productivity increases dependency on fossil fuels, the earth may face a catastrophic environmental collapse, uprooting up to 3 billion people by 2070. Urrego drew a clear link between AI and climate catastrophe. He argued that the conventional nation-state model is inadequate to handle these interrelated issues and called for a paradigm change in global government.
He emphasised the necessity of mankind acting as a single political body and suggested the establishment of a worldwide, multilateral public authority to control AI and handle the climate problem. To avoid economic and social disaster, he emphasised that international public supervision, not corporate interests or state laws, must control the digital buildup of knowledge in the cloud.
