Julie Inman Grant is not even there when the interview begins, and the topic of conversation shifts to the weekly influx of rape and murder threats her office receives. As the chairman of Australia’s Social Media Safety Commission, she has been directly involved in online conflicts involving trolls, censorship, fake news, and children’s safety.
A coworker acknowledges that the internet may be a “cesspit, noting that Inman Grant is the subject of most of the hate mail directed at them.A few minutes later, in her office with a view of Sydney Harbour, the 57-year-old tells me, “Unfortunately, I’ve been living that reality for the past several years.”
As the head of Australia’s independent internet safety regulator, Inman Grant has spent decades working in the private IT sector, but now she’s on the other side, holding some of the world’s most prosperous firms accountable.
She is arguably now the most well-known bureaucrat in the nation as a result. However, it has also turned her into a target. She has openly sparred with Elon Musk, been doxxed by neo-Nazi groups, and even angered certain members of the US Congress.
