According to the Ministry of Defense (MoD), two Russian warplanes “repeatedly and dangerously” intercepted an unarmed RAF spy plane over the Black Sea last month. The Rivet Joint observation plane was approached by a Russian Su-35 fighter, which came close enough to trigger its emergency systems and disable its autopilot. Additionally, a Su-27 jet made six passes in front of the RAF aircraft, approaching its nose as closely as six meters (19 feet).
Defense Secretary John Healey commended the “outstanding professionalism” of the RAF crew during “unacceptable” Russian flybys, which the MoD claims are the riskiest Russian actions since a “rogue” pilot fired a missile at a Rivet Joint over the Black Sea in 2022.
