Iran’s first vice-president announced that internet connectivity had been restored after being taken off about three months ago.On Tuesday, Mohammad Reza Aref posted on X: “The first step toward free and regulated access to cyberspace has been taken.” Internet monitoring groups Netblocks and Kentik reported “partial” restoration about 13:00 GMT, with the latter warning that most networks remained offline.
Following the US and Israeli attacks on February 28, the Iranian regime stopped internet connection. Officials said that the goal was to prevent spying, espionage, and cyber-attack. It is one of the world’s longest national internet shutdowns.
A Tehran-based video creator informed the BBC that he was able to connect to the internet using his house WiFi on Tuesday.
“The main point is that some of my income will be returned,” he stated. Isik Mater, research director of the global internet tracker, stated on Tuesday that access has not been restored globally, with some geographical difference.
The speaker reported more filtering, including limits on messaging apps like WhatsApp, compared to a comparable blackout imposed in January amid the regime’s assault on anti-government rallies. This means that families may still have difficulty contacting loved ones for the time being.
