After receiving a straight red card for fouling Bosnia-Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic in the previous round, Balogun, 25, was expected to miss his team’s match against Belgium in the round of sixteen.
However, Fifa’s unexpected decision to delay the obligatory one-match suspension for a whole year sparked a lot of backlash, particularly from Uefa, Belgium, and England manager Thomas Tuchel.
Balogun, a forward from the United States who has scored three goals in this summer’s tournament, can now be chosen for the match in Seattle, which begins at 17:00 local time (01:00 BST on Tuesday), thanks to Fifa’s decision.
Trump claimed that the world governing body of football “made the right decision” and that if the ban had been put into place, it would have left a “big stain” on the competition. Trump stated at the White House on Monday that he “didn’t think it was a foul” and that he had requested Fifa to reconsider the ruling.
He acknowledged that he had spoken with Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, but claimed that “all” he had done was request a review and that he had not informed the Swiss that Balogun’s ban ought to be suspended. I believe it [the suspension] would have left a big stain,” Trump continued. I am unable to advise them. I think the commission made the decision, not them. And that was the right choice.
