Air India has named a new chief executive as the airline faces increasing challenges including massive financial losses and the aftermath of last year’s tragedy that killed 260 people.
Tewolde Gebremariam will follow Campbell Wilson, who left as head of the airline in April. Gebremariam is a former CEO of Ethiopian carriers, where he spent more than a decade transforming the regional carrier into one of Africa’s largest carriers.
The Tata Group bought Air India from the Indian government in 2022 and the airline has been facing operational instability. According to the Air India website, the airline has a fleet of 198 aircraft, operating almost 5,000 weekly flights to 91 destinations in India and internationally.
Air India said its board unanimously chose Gebremariam after a broad search, noting his leadership and operational experience to guide the airline’s “next phase of growth”. Air India has completed the first phase of stabilisation, integration and fleet commitments under Campbell’s leadership and is now moving into the next phase of execution and expansion,” said N Chandrasekaran, chairman of Air India.
