The most recent America’s Got Talent winner, 16-year-old rock star Nene Royal, is the first-ever Thai winner of the venerable talent competition. Nene, whose real name is Rattikarn Amloy, sang a version of American rock duo The White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army at the show’s finals on Tuesday in California. Nine other competitors, including magicians, dogs, and even a robot dance troupe, were defeated by her heavy metal performances.
The fact that she was able to reach “one of the biggest stages in the world” is being celebrated by many in Thailand. She has been dubbed a “inspiration to anyone who dares to dream big” by the Thai government. Early in the competition, a viral video of Nene’s audition—in which she sang Zombie by The Cranberries to a startled panel of judges—made her a clear fan favourite. Twenty million people have watched the video.
Nene and Linkin Park performed the American band’s 2024 rock song, The Emptiness Machine, on stage on Wednesday nite prior to the results being revealed. Later that evening, she sobbed while kneeling on the ground to accept the $1 million (£755,000) prize for winning the show’s 21st season.She thanked everyone for their support and remarked, “I’m very happy and emotional right now.”
