The location of a planned opposition protest in Delhi on Sunday, which is expected to call for the resignation of the nation’s election chief over a contentious modification of voter lists, was encircled by Indian security forces armed with batons and shields and accompanied by riot control vehicles.
Prior to the protest march and rally, which Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi would lead, authorities issued a warning about traffic delays. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to participate in what the opposition claims would be a significant challenge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Since last month, opposition parties, student organisations, and the youth-led Cockroach Janta Party have staged almost daily protests calling for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign due to the voter list alteration, which they claim favours the BJP.
Senior police officer Rohit Rajbir told ANI, “People have begun to come to participate in this rally. We have ensured proper arrangements at the venue, and arrangements are also planned on the route of the march that will happen in a few hours.”
The Indian Express newspaper revealed in September that Kumar’s two deputies had voiced multiple internal concerns regarding voter list modifications, registration procedures, and digital systems, which sparked the protests calling for Kumar’s resignation.
