After more than $200 million in opposition spending, Democrat James Talarico emerged victorious in the Texas Senate race, causing one of the biggest upsets for Republicans in the midterm elections. In addition to being the first Democrat to win a US Senate seat in Texas since 1988, Talarico’s unexpected victory over Republican Ken Paxton contributed to Democrats seizing control of the US Congress as part of a wave of victories across the country. Prior to last year, Talarico was a little-known former educator. He centred his campaign on the growing expense of life under Republican rule.
Paxton frequently ran alongside Trump in an effort to paint Talarico’s opinions as too progressive for the state. Gina Hinojosa will become the first Latina governor of Texas, defeating Republican incumbent Greg Abbott, one of the most prominent governors in the country and a long-time Trump supporter, in another historic win for Democrats in the state. On Tuesday nite, Talarico’s supporters celebrated his victory on enormous television screens at a watch party in Austin, the state capital.
Supporters kissed, hugged, and toasted to a reality that many claim they were afraid would materialise. At his official watch party at a local performing arts theatre, Talarico emerged on stage to thunderous acclaim and declared, “We just took back Texas.”He went on, “We just proved that all the money in the world is no match for the people of Texas,” alluding to his victory over Paxton, whose campaign was supported by the richest man in the world, Elon Musk.
