Michael Tubbs grew up in Stockton, California, an hour’s drive from Silicon Valley, the epicenter of the artificial intelligence revolution that is expected to permanently alter American lifestyles and workplaces.
However, Tubbs told CNN that despite growing up in the backyard of Big Tech, his childhood was characterized by “scarcity and poverty.” Tubbs, 33, claims he never saw his teenage mother because “she was always working— and it was never enough.” Tubbs was born into a family of teenagers.
Global business executives and legislators are now warning more and more that the development of artificial intelligence will probably have a significant impact on the labor market and may result in the loss of millions of jobs in the coming years (while also creating new and different opportunities in the process). The emergence of AI might impact almost 40% of jobs globally, according to a warning issued by the International Monetary Fund earlier this year. This trend is expected to widen the already enormous gap between the rich and the poor.
According to Tubbs and other proponents of guaranteed income, this could be one way to assist provide a safety net and lessen the projected damage as more American employment are at risk due to the threat of AI.
