Calin Georgescu, a far-right pro-Russian candidate, was disqualified by Romania’s central electoral commission on Sunday from contesting in the rerun of the May presidential election. The constitutional court may hear an appeal to the denial of his candidacy, which was denounced as undemocratic by leaders of the far-right party. Outside the election bureau, dozens of Georgescu supporters gathered and yelled “Freedom.” They briefly attempted to break through the security barrier.
In the face of uncertainty about his eligibility, Georgescu filed his candidacy on Friday for the May ballot rerun. Two days before the second round of voting in December, Romania’s top court declared the election void, citing claims of Russian meddling in Georgescu’s favour a claim Moscow has refuted.
The cancelled election in Romania was used by members of US President Donald Trump’s cabinet as an illustration of how European nations repress political opponents and freedom of speech.
On his social media site X, tech entrepreneur and Trump advisor Elon Musk referred to the electoral authority’s ruling as “crazy.” Georgescu faces six criminal charges, including disseminating misleading information on campaign funding and belonging to a fascist group. He has denied any misconduct.
