After years of watching Charlie Kirk’s videos, the 22-year-old Utah Valley University student attributes his own political activity to the conservative firebrand. Mr. Sperry decided it was time to give back by joining the Turning Point USA chapter, which Kirk co-founded in 2012 to promote conservatism on college campuses, just before his political idol was scheduled to speak on campus this Thursday afternoon.
Mr. Sperry was sitting in the front row while Kirk spoke, and he watched in disbelief as a sniper shot went off and blood began to flow from Kirk’s neck. He said he still can’t get the pictures out of his head, but he believes the loss will only make the movement Kirk encouraged him to join stronger.
Trying to silence a voice like this doesn’t make it go away; it just makes it louder,” the second-year student stated. “There are now going to be a million Charlie Kirks, and I feel like that’s the thing that we need to do.
Some at Utah Valley University noted that as the first shock of the attack fades, a strong sense of resolve to carry on what Kirk started has taken its place.
Students from a range of political backgrounds, including those who strongly disagree with Kirk’s views, told the BBC that they have felt a personal need to support constructive discussions on college campuses.
