Nearly two decades after surpassing Las Vegas as the world’s largest casino destination, Macau is now attempting to establish itself as a significant hub for medical tourism. This week, a so-called resort hospital in China’s special administrative region opened, offering upscale medical services such as advanced scans, cosmetic surgeries, and health screenings. It implies that Beijing’s aim for a more varied economy has intensified.
The Covid-19 pandemic forced Macau’s casinos to close, destroying their earnings. Although the city’s economy has now rebounded, authorities are trying to shift its focus from gambling to sectors including events, technology, and healthcare.
The area has long profited from its reputation as a gambling hub, attracting tourists from Hong Kong, mainland China, and other Asian countries. That number is close to 40 million visitors annually, according to iRad Hospital, the private healthcare organization that owns the medical resort. Additionally, it hopes that by providing healthcare services, people will stay longer and spend more money.
The establishment is located in Studio City, a casino and entertainment complex with a Hollywood theme that is operated by a corporation based in Hong Kong. Soon after the former Portuguese colony was transferred to Chinese rule in 1999, authorities opened Macau’s gambling sector to international casino operators, sparking the gaming boom of the early 2000s.
