On Wednesday, Gisele Pelicot, a Frenchwoman who rose to feminist hero status in a mass rape trial last year, forced the one man who continues to deny raping her to “take responsibility” for his conduct.
In a case that rocked the world, the 72-year-old’s ex-husband acknowledged giving her hypnotic drugs and inviting scores of strangers to rape and abuse her over almost ten years. Last year, Dominique Pelicot, 72, was given the maximum sentence of 20 years in prison by a court in southern France. Neither he nor the other 49 individuals found guilty in the case are contesting their sentences.
In a cool but firm voice, Gisele Pelicot, who is well-known for arguing that the ones who should feel guilty are the ones who commit sexual violence, flatly rejected his position. You are by no means Mr Pelicot’s victim. Be accountable for your actions. “On the third day of the appeal trial, I am ashamed of you!” she exclaimed in court in the city of Nimes. At what point did I assent to you? “And,” Gisele Pelicot said. “Never.”
