Trump Reiterates That India Will Reduce its Imports of Russian Oil

President Donald Trump of the United States has reaffirmed that India has committed to lowering its purchases of Russian crude. Trump said that during a phone conversation on Tuesday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had told him that Delhi “was not going to buy much oil from Russia” because he “wants to see the war with Russia-Ukraine end.” In a social media message, Modi appreciated Trump’s call and his “warm greetings” on the occasion of Diwali, but he made no remarks regarding Russian oil.

The Indian foreign ministry at the time claimed it was “not aware” of any phone conversation between the leaders, despite Trump’s similar statements from last week. A ministry spokesman told the BBC on Wednesday that the ministry has nothing fresh to say about Trump’s recent comments. “As I already stated, I had a conversation with Prime Minister Modi today. Additionally, our relationship is excellent. Additionally, Trump told reporters during Tuesday’s White House Diwali festivities that he would not purchase a lot of oil from Russia.

“He wants the conflict between Russia and Ukraine to stop. Additionally, they won’t be purchasing a lot of oil, as you are aware. Thus, they have already made significant cuts and are now making significant cuts.
