After ten turbulent months of tit-for-tat tariffs and global economic uncertainty, President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping met Thursday for crucial trade talks. Both sides appear ready to move toward a long-awaited deal.
Speaking to reporters on Air Force One, President Trump described the meeting as “a great success,” adding that the US is set to finalize a trade agreement with China “pretty soon.” Tensions between the world’s two largest economies had ramped up over issues like semiconductor access and rare earth minerals vital elements for cutting-edge manufacturing.
Trump announced he would reduce tariffs on Chinese goods, saying the US and China had resolved disputes over rare earth minerals. He also revealed that Beijing would negotiate directly with US chip maker Nvidia, with America acting as “a sort of referee.” However, he did not share further details.
China’s official statement was more reserved, only noting a general consensus to address major trade problems. Trump assured that “many important points” had been settled and promised details soon.
