Refunds for billions of dollars in tariffs that the US Supreme Court overturned in February have started to be processed by the Trump administration. Companies can apply online to have repaid the money they were charged under the so-called “Liberation Day” tariffs, together with interest, as part of what will be the largest repayment program in history.
About 330,000 importers may be able to get their money back after the US Court of International Trade ordered customs authorities to return the more than $160 billion (£121 billion) the government had collected in March. However, compensation is not anticipated for those particular consumers who were indirectly impacted by the levies through increased prices.
The International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) taxes imposed by US President Donald Trump are the subject of the refunds.Judge Richard Eaton stated in March that “all importers of record whose entries were subject to IEEPA duties are entitled to the benefit” from the high court’s decision. When the portal opened in early April, almost 56,000 importers had finished the online application process for refunds, totaling $127 billion (£94 billion).
