After meeting the crown prince of Saudi Arabia the day before, Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa made his most recent stop on a Gulf tour when he landed in Doha on Wednesday for discussions with the leadership of Qatar.
According to Qatar’s foreign ministry, Al-Sharaa met with Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the country’s emir, and discussed investment and economic cooperation. According to the Qatar News Agency (QNA), he arrived at Doha International Airport and was greeted by high-ranking authorities.
In a post on X, Al-Sharaa claimed to have had a “fraternal meeting” and reaffirmed his nation’s support for Qatar in the face of challenges to its security and sovereignty, according to QNA.
Since the overthrow of dictator Bashar al-Assad’s regime, ties between Saudi Arabia and Syria have improved, with Riyadh supporting Syria’s reintegration into the region. Since taking office after al-Assad was overthrown in December 2024, Al-Sharaa has visited several Gulf states, notably Saudi Arabia four times.
One of the first Arab nations to re-engage with Syria’s new leadership was Qatar. The first Arab leader to meet al-Sharaa since taking office was Emir Sheikh Al Thani, who traveled to Damascus in January 2025.
