Hackers Duped Instagram’s AI Chatbot Into Giving Access to other People’s Accounts

Instagram claims it has fixed an issue in which hackers tricked its AI assistance tool into allowing them access to other users’ accounts. According to assertions made in photos and videos shared on social media, Instagram’s AI chatbot has enabled users to “hijack” accounts.

Hackers can change passwords for other accounts by simulating their location and instructing AI to alter the corresponding emails. This problem has been rectified, and we are securing affected accounts,” Meta spokesperson Andy Stone told subscribers in a statement on X. In response to another post on X, Stone stated that suggestions the vulnerability was exploited to break into the accounts of international leaders were “completely false.

According to tech news outlet 404media, posts exposing the vulnerability coincided with “a series of high-profile Instagram account takeovers,” including a verified account used by Barack Obama during his time in the White House.

Prior to its recovery, the former US president’s account was said to have posted pro-Iran messages. It’s unknown how many Instagram accounts were impacted by the purported exploit.
