Although The Official Ebola Statistics Appear to be Declining, it’s Not that Easy

Following a sharp decline in the number of cases, the most recent Ebola data from the Democratic Republic of the Congo seem to provide some hope. At one point, the police reported roughly 250 suspected deaths and over 1,000 suspected cases.

Currently, there are about 380 confirmed cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, including 60 fatalities. Additionally, there are 15 confirmed cases and one fatality in neighboring Uganda.

The main distinction, though, is that the authorities are now discussing proven cases as opposed to suspected ones. Therefore, it would be incorrect to believe that the decline in numbers indicates that the outbreak is suddenly less dangerous.

Better data is reflected in the drop, as laboratories were able to rule out many patients with fever who were actually suffering from other illnesses, such as malaria, which is prevalent in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The outbreak had a “big head start,” but response teams are now “catching up,” according to Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the World Health Organization (WHO).
