As he began his formal visit to Spain, Pope Leo XIV praised the country’s administration for supporting migrants and opposing war. Pope Leo discussed Spain’s “active commitment to peace and solidarity among peoples” at a reception with King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia at the royal palace in Madrid.
The Pope praised Spain’s “faithful adherence to international law and multilateralism,” while Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has clashed with US President Donald Trump over Iran and Israel over the war in Gaza. Pope Leo will meet with organizations that support migrant welfare as well as victims of sexual abuse inside the Catholic Church during his seven-day tour.
In Madrid, the Pope stated that the message of peace should be “welcomed by those who do not shut themselves off in preconceived ideologies” rather than “at present unfortunately striking some as naive and others as confrontational.
Before landing, the Pope told reporters that sexual abuse was still “an open wound” for the Church. After years of concerns that religious authorities had not adequately addressed the matter, Sanchez’s government and the Spanish Catholic Church announced an agreement in March to pay victims.
