Following Britain’s agreement to supply information on UK-made components of the Franco-British weapon, Ukraine has taken a step closer to manufacturing SCALP cruise missiles domestically. After months of talks between Kyiv and Paris on local manufacture and licensing, the decision makes it possible for the missiles to be assembled in Ukraine.
The action should improve Ukraine’s defensive capabilities, according to Luke Pollard, the UK’s Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry.The missiles have already been employed by Ukraine against Russian military targets and infrastructure, including defence industrial sites and command posts both inside Russia and on occupied Ukrainian territory.
In 2023, the UK was the first nation to supply Ukraine with long-range cruise missiles. Three years later, the technology transfer represents a another change in Western assistance, as countries shift from providing completed weapons to assisting Ukraine in producing its own advanced systems.
As Ukraine gets ready for another winter of Russian strikes on its towns and energy infrastructure, the gathering leaders also pledged to share pertinent technologies, especially through the Anti-Ballistic Missile Coalition.
