After being led out of a canal on Wednesday, a well-known dusky shark from South Korea is still hanging around. When the shark, known as Bukangi, was seen swimming in a canal in the southeast port city of Busan last month, it caused an unexpected stir. Rescuers used big nets for weeks in an unsuccessful attempt to return it to the open sea. Authorities announced on Thursday that they had strengthened obstacles to stop Bukangi from going back. However, it has not yet ventured out into the open ocean and has been continually returning to the waterway’s entrance.
In Busan, opinions on the shark’s rescue were divided; some believed it should remain, while others thought it would be best for it to leave. It took more than eight hours for rescue personnel to carefully steer the three-meter-long (10-foot) shark toward open water in a port during a livestreamed operation on Wednesday. At the park with a view of the canal, hundreds of devoted spectators gathered to cheer and bid the shark farewell. However, Bukangi apparently broke through an official barrier on Thursday morning and swam back into the canal. Bukangi was imprisoned for a while in the canal between two layers of nets.
