In an attempt to improve their chances of winning the midterm, Republicans flocked to Dallas this week in the hopes that President Donald Trump’s unusual convention would invigorate supporters in advance of the November election. Many departed the event, which supporters had advertized in advance as a “Trump-a-palooza” political celebration, equally concerned about the party’s prospects in 2026 and uncertain about the Republicans’ post-presidential future.
During his keynote speech on Thursday nite, Vice-President JD Vance, who is considered a strong candidate to succeed Trump, gave his party a preview of its possible future.Vance addressed the gathering, saying, “We have to take care of business this November.”After that, we’ll worry about what happens next.” Chants of “48”—a reference to Trump’s successor, who would become the 48th US president if they win in 2028—interrupted his address at one point. Vance waved the chant away after letting it linger for a moment. Party activists disagreed during the course of the two-day event on the appropriateness of hosting a midterm convention with a president whose support ratings are at an all-time low, as well as the public’s dissatisfaction with the war with Iran and the economy.
