Police in Delhi detained the originator of India’s “cockroach” movement, Abhijeet Dipke, and a few others as they sought to stop a protest calling for the resignation of the country’s election chief. Despite the massive security presence, hundreds congregated in Connaught Place, one of the capital’s busiest commercial districts, waving Indian flags and screaming slogans.
Police cordoned off Central Park where the demonstration was to be held and deployed thousands of police and paramilitary forces to prevent the gathering. The Gen Z-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has accused India’s Election Commission of altering voter records to suit Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling BJP. They both reject the charge.
The group has organised a number of protests in Delhi in recent weeks, with police arresting its leaders and supporters on more than one occasion. Security was also tight for Friday’s protest, although the police response was less heavy-handed than the widespread crackdown last weekend.
The cops visited the house where Dipke was staying hours before the protest. In a live Instagram video, he questioned the officers who had come to warn him against staging the march if it was illegal to wave the Indian flag.
