In the most recent repercussions over the university’s handling of an alleged gang rape on campus, Governor Kathy Hochul said on Thursday that New York State Police will take over future sexual assault investigations at Cornell University. The announcement comes after a woman known only as Jane Doe said she was sexually assaulted by members of a Cornell fraternity, prompting considerable criticism of the university’s actions in the case and questions about why no criminal charges were brought.
“When someone reports sexual assault, they deserve to be heard and treated with compassion and know their allegations will be taken seriously and thoroughly investigated,” Hochul said in a statement. New York State Police and Cornell University signed an agreement that sexual offence complaints, which typically fall under the purview of campus police, will be referred to state police for criminal investigation unless otherwise requested by the accuser.
Hochul described the Jane Doe accusations as “horrifying,” adding that survivors ought to have faith in the organisations tasked with safeguarding them. We can’t afford to disappoint them. A request for comment after regular business hours was not immediately answered by Cornell University.
