An American doctor in the Democratic Republic of Congo has been diagnosed with Ebola, according to the medical missionary group they were working with and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
According to CBS News, the BBC’s US partner, the unnamed individual will now be transferred to Germany for treatment. The president of the Africa CDC informed the BBC that at least 100 people have died in the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with more than 390 cases suspected.
The WHO has labeled the outbreak an international emergency. The current Ebola strain is caused by the Bundibugyo virus. The US CDC reports two confirmed cases and one fatality in Uganda.
CBS According to news reports, at least six Americans were exposed to the Ebola virus during the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The CDC stated that it supports the “safe withdrawal of a small number of Americans who are directly affected” but did not specify how many. According to STAT, the US government is looking into arranging transportation for a limited group of Americans in DR Congo to a safe quarantine facility.
