Four self-driving vehicles will race simultaneously at the Yas Marina Circuit on Saturday, creating racing history.
The Aspire Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League (A2RL) will feature eight teams competing for a $2.25 million prize pool in this ground-breaking competition.
Eight teams are expected to compete: Fly Eagle, which represents Beijing Institute of Technology in China and Khalifa University; KINETIZ, which is a joint venture between Singapore Nanyang Technological University and Kintsugi in the United Arab Emirates; PoliMOVE, which represents Politecnico di Milano in Italy; UNIMORE, which is based in Italy and consists of the Universities of Modena and Reggio Emilia; and Technical University of Munich, or TUM, from Germany.
Exclusive access to identical Dallara Super Formula SF23 vehicles will be granted to each of the competing teams of engineers and programmers thanks to a collaboration with Japan Race Promotions. Technology Innovation Institute (TII)-developed and integrated autonomous racing stacks will be used to automate these vehicles. All that is different is how each team uses its machine learning software development experience, AI algorithms, and coding talents to teach its cars to drive. These cars can attain speeds of up to 300 kmph, making them the second fastest open-wheel race cars in the world, behind Formula One.
