An enormous 5-gigawatt data centre complex in Abu Dhabi, possibly one of the biggest in the world, is set to be anchored by OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. This represents a revolutionary opportunity for the GCC’s AI push.
This initiative highlights OpenAI’s strategic growth outside the US and represents a significant turning point in the UAE’s ambition to become a global AI powerhouse. It was created in partnership with the digital behemoth G42 in Abu Dhabi. Although specifics are still being kept under wraps, people familiar with the project suggest an announcement might soon be made, marking the beginning of a new era for Middle Eastern AI infrastructure.
The Abu Dhabi campus is a key component of OpenAI’s Stargate plan, a joint venture with SoftBank and Oracle launched in January 2025 that aims to build enormous data centres worldwide to support the development of sophisticated artificial intelligence. With a capacity more than four times greater than its US equivalent, the UAE project eclipses its 1.2-gigawatt plant currently under development in Abilene, Texas.
The complex, which will contain state-of-the-art chips, would take up 10 square miles of space and need electricity equivalent to five nuclear reactors. 500,000 of Nvidia’s most recent processors will be required for the first 1-gigawatt phase. OpenAI will share this capability with other businesses to increase the project’s regional impact.
