According to a law firm defending the claimants, Google has agreed to pay $28 million (£21.5 million) to resolve a lawsuit alleging that Asian and white employees received more excellent compensation and development possibilities than employees from other ethnic origins. The IT behemoth denied the accusations against it, but acknowledged that it had “resolved”.
Workers from Hispanic, Latino, Native American, and other backgrounds began on lower incomes and job levels than their white and Asian counterparts, according to a 2021 lawsuit filed by former Google employee Ana Cantu. Judge Charles Adams of the Santa Clara County Superior Court in California has granted preliminary approval for the settlement.
A leaked internal document claimed that workers from specific ethnic origins reported lower compensation for similar work, which was the basis for Ms. Cantu’s lawsuit against Google. According to Ms. Cantu’s attorneys, the practice of basing starting pay and job level on previous salary perpetuated historical discrepancies based on race and ethnicity.
According to the Reuters news agency, the class action complaint was brought on behalf of at least 6,632 Google employees who worked there between February 15, 2018, to December 31, 2024. Cathy Coble, one of their attorneys, commended “the courage of both the diverse and ally Googlers who self-reported their pay and leaked that data to the media.
