India: Kerala and Maharashtra Have the Largest Numbers of COVID-19 cases, Which are Rising Quickly

A growing number of COVID-19 instances have been found recently in several Asian countries, with Singapore and Hong Kong accounting for the majority of cases. The number of cases found has been significantly increasing in India as well. According to Indian media sources, 164 additional instances have been reported since May 12.

In the last week, there have been 69 new cases recorded in Kerala, 44 in Maharashtra, and 34 in Tamil Nadu. Maharashtra has also reported two deaths, although medical professionals have explained that although the patients tested positive for COVID-19, the virus was not the cause of the deaths.

COVID-19 instances have been on the rise throughout Southeast Asia. Health officials have issued warnings about a dramatic increase, particularly in Singapore and Hong Kong. According to data from Hong Kong’s Centre for Health Protection, the infection rate increased from 1.7% in mid-March to 11.4%, surpassing the highest recorded in August 2024.

The Singaporean health ministry sent an update on the COVID-19 figures on May 13, “monitoring a recent increase” in infections. Yet, “there is no indication that the variants circulating locally are more transmissible or cause more severe disease compared to previously circulating variants,” the advice stated.
