In Bangkok, a state of emergency was imposed after scores of workers were trapped in a collapsed under-construction tower after a strong earthquake shook Myanmar and neighbouring Thailand on Friday.
According to the US Geological Survey, on Friday afternoon, the 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck northwest of Sagaing at a shallow depth. Within minutes, the same region was struck by an aftershock with a magnitude of 6.4. According to police and medical officials, 43 construction workers were trapped when a 30-story building fell in the Thai capital.
According to footage posted on social media, the enormous structure that was supposed to house government offices was quickly reduced to a mess of debris and twisted metal. Worapat Sukthai, Bang Sue district deputy police commander, told AFP, “I heard people calling for help, saying help me, when I arrived to inspect the site.”
We are currently counting the number of casualties, but we think that hundreds of people are hurt,” he stated. A group of AFP reporters were in Myanmar, across the border, at the National Museum in Naypyidaw when the earthquake occurred.
