PM Yunus of Bangladesh and Modi Spoke on Hasina and Minority Protection

During his meeting with Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser of the interim government in Bangladesh, on the fringes of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok on Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi brought up the subject of the safety and security of minorities in Bangladesh, especially Hindus.

Since the Awami League administration led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was overthrown and an interim government led by Yunus was established in the adjacent country last August, this was the first time the two leaders had met in person.

Prime Minister Modi expressed his belief that all matters of mutual interest between the two nations would continue to be addressed and settled bilaterally through positive dialogues in the interest of the two nations’ long-standing bilateral relationship, and he urged that any rhetoric that degrades the environment be avoided.

At a media briefing following the BIMSTEC Summit, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated, “The Prime Minister also emphasised India’s concerns regarding the safety and security of minorities in Bangladesh, including Hindus, and expressed his expectation that the government of Bangladesh would ensure their security, including by thoroughly investigating all cases of atrocities committed against them.
