According to state court papers, the guy who is accused of attempting to kill author Salman Rushdie and causing him to lose one eye will go on trial for attempted murder on Tuesday. A federal court has also separately charged Hadi Matar, an American of Lebanese heritage, with terrorism after he allegedly carried out the stabbing attack in 2022 on behalf of Hezbollah.
When a knife-wielding attacker came on stage at an arts event in New York State in August 2022 and stabbed Rushdie roughly ten times, the 77-year-old novelist lost vision in his right eye.
Because of his writing, the Indian-born author, a naturalised American living in New York, has received death threats. Despite having just read two pages of Rushdie’s book, Matar told the New York Post that he thought the author had “attacked Islam. Before the assailant later identified as Matar was brought down by guests and security personnel, Rushdie was stabbed in the neck and abdomen. According to a New York state case listing database, Matar was scheduled to appear before Chautauqua County Court judge David Foley on Tuesday.
He is accused of assault and attempted murder in this case. Knife’, Rushdie’s memoir, was released last year and detailed the near-death incident. Why didn’t I fight? Why didn’t I run? Rushdie stated, “I just stood there like a pinata and let him smash me.
