On Saturday, April 5, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, described the escalating trade war between the United States and other countries as ‘unprovoked and unjustified’ after US markets fell on Friday.
The spokeswoman also described the continuing tariff battle between the United States and other countries, which began after Donald Trump announced reciprocal duties on April 2, 2025, as ‘unprovoked and unjustified. The trade and tariff war started by the US against the rest of the world is unprovoked and unjustified,” the social media post read.
As global tensions build over the escalation of the current tariff war, China’s Foreign Ministry advised that the United States cease “doing the wrong things” and address its issues with its trading partners worldwide.
On Friday, April 4, Wall Street experienced its greatest crisis since the COVID-19 epidemic, when China revealed plans to put 34% extra tariffs on all US imports. China’s intention to implement the extra tariffs will go effective on April 10, as a reprisal against US President Donald Trump’s reciprocal penalties declaration.
The US benchmark indices, such as the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), closed 5.50 percent lower at 38,314.86 points on Friday, shedding roughly 2,200 points from the previous market closing of 40,545.93.
