Trump’s Plan Deals with Political and Economic Reality

Donald Trump pledged that the history books would mark April 2 as America’s “liberation day” when he announced his broad new tariffs on US imports on Wednesday. After two days of stock market turbulence, this may be remembered as the week the president’s second-term agenda collided with economic and political realities.

US equities have plummeted since Trump announced his tariffs at Wednesday afternoon’s White House Rose Garden ceremony, with hints that America’s trading partners – most notably Canada, the European Union, and China – are not backing down from a confrontation.

On Thursday, the White House appeared to be bracing for a storm. Four large posters depicting America’s “reciprocal” tariffs on a long number of countries were prominently displayed in the press briefing room, but government officials who could answer media queries were few and far between.

Workers unloaded pallets of metal fencing that will surround the White House grounds in preparation for what officials expect to be a big anti-Trump rally at the nearby Washington Monument on Saturday. The first lady revealed that a White House garden tour scheduled for that day had been postponed due to security concerns.
