Ukraine and its European allies have urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to a 30-day truce, which could begin as soon as Monday, after the leaders of Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Poland arrived in Kyiv on Saturday.
Friedrich Merz, the next German Chancellor, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and his Polish counterpart Donald Tusk all arrived Saturday morning at Kyiv’s main railway station. Shortly after, they met with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“There is a lot of work to be done and difficulties to address. This conflict must conclude with a just peace. Andriy Yermak, Zelensky’s chief of staff, tweeted on his Telegram channel that Moscow should be pressed to agree to a ceasefire.
Ukraine, backed by the Europeans, has called for an immediate unconditional 30-day ceasefire, which US President Donald Trump has also demanded. On Saturday, European leaders in Kyiv held a “fruitful call” with Trump that was “focused on peace talks,” Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said in a post on X.
“Ukraine and all allies are ready for a full unconditional ceasefire on land, air, and at sea for at least 30 days beginning Monday,” Sybiha said, adding that a “durable ceasefire” may open the door for full-scale peace talks if Russia agrees.
