US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has rekindled the US’s long standing interest in Greenland. During a hearing Wednesday before the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Congresswoman Sarah McBride asked him if he was “aware that Greenland is indeed part of Denmark.”
Speculation over Greenland has been rampant since the return of US President Donald Trump to the White House, with the president constantly insisting that Washington needs to acquire the Danish territory to boost national defence. Trump has also warned China or Russia could capture the island if the US does not intervene.
The administration has been talking to both Greenland and Denmark about using the island for “collective defence” and missile defence, Rubio told the committee on Wednesday. WE are in those discussions presently. “I think we’re in a good place on it,” Rubio added.
At the height of the Cold War, the US was said to have maintained 17 military sites and over 10,000 personnel stationed on Greenland. The island has just one base, the Pituffik Space Base, the northernmost base of the US Department of Defense.
