Asaad al-Shibani, the foreign minister of Syria, will fly his nation’s new flag at the United Nations headquarters in New York when he attends a Security Council briefing. This is the first time a senior Syrian government official has visited the United States in public since former President Bashar al-Assad was overthrown last December. The country’s official insignia has changed from the two-starred banner of the Assad period to the three-starred flag that opposition organisations used throughout the civil war.
In an attempt to get respite from the severe sanctions imposed by the United States and its allies during al-Assad’s violent suppression of anti-government demonstrations in 2011 and the civil war that followed, the new Damascus leadership has been wooing Washington. This week, a group of Syrian officials flew to the United States to attend UN meetings in New York and meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund in Washington.
The current Syrian government, headed by Ahmad al-Sharaa, an Islamist former insurgent who spearheaded the attack that overthrew Assad, has not yet received official recognition from the Trump administration. Additionally, although temporarily lifting certain limitations, Washington has so far maintained sanctions against Syria.
