As the Trump administration intensifies its efforts to end the conflict in close coordination with Russia, China’s top diplomat told a gathering of G20 foreign ministers on Thursday that a “window for peace is opening” in Ukraine.
Following US President Donald Trump’s radical shift towards Moscow this month, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on the fringes of the South African event. This is the first high-level meeting between the two close allies.

The G20 foreign ministers’ meeting, which US Secretary of State Marco Rubio did not attend, was held at a time when rapid diplomacy has pushed China and Europe to the margins and sparked concerns about a shifting power dynamic in a volatile geopolitical environment.
At the Johannesburg meeting, Wang informed his peers that China “supports all efforts dedicated to peace, including the recent consensus reached between the US and Russia.
