Flights at the International Hub Airport are Delayed Due to The Kenyan Strike

According to the national airline and airports authority, flights into and out of Kenya’s main airport are being delayed as a result of a planned strike by workers in the aviation industry. There has been a four-hour delay in departing aircraft from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, one of Africa’s largest transportation hubs.

Several travellers report being seated on aeroplanes for long periods while pilots wait for the all-clear to depart. Kenya Airways reported “air traffic control operational delays affecting certain departures and arrivals” in a statement. To limit interruptions and ensure safe operations, it further stated that it was collaborating with the authorities. The airline apologised for the inconvenience and warned passengers to anticipate potential schedule changes, including delays.

The Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) warned a week earlier that it would go on strike over low wages and unfavourable working conditions, prompting the disruptions. The strike began at 6:00 local time (03:00 GMT) and is affecting both travellers and airlines nationwide, KAWU Secretary-General Moss Ndiema told the local Daily Nation news website. A significant backlog exists. He was cited as saying, “Aeroplanes are barely leaving the airports.”
